From April 30, 2009, the monks of Holy Resurrection Monastery will be living as guests of St. Andrew's Abbey, Valyermo CA. This arrangement is temporary (up to three years) while the Holy Resurrection community, with the assistance of their advisors, look for a permanent home in Southern California.

Preparations for the Byzantine monks' move from their small monastery in the Mojave Desert near Barstow began in 2007, when the community decided that their five-fold mission --- including opening their liturgical services to as wide a community as possible and exposing more Roman Catholics to authentic Eastern Catholic tradition --- would be better served in a less remote location.

Meeting with Supporters, Feb. 21

On Saturday, February 21 2009 about 70 friends and supporters of the Monastery turned out to pray with the monks and hear more of their plans for the future. Thanks to the generosity of the pastor, Father James Babcock, the gathering was held at Holy Cross Melkite Greek-Catholic Church in Placentia, CA.

St Philip's Associates

On the Feast of St. Nicholas, December 6th, Father Abbot Nicholas received 14 new Monastic Associates, and our first parish chapter, that of St. Philip the Apostle Melkite Greek-Catholic Mission in San Bernardino, CA. Among this group was our first clerical Associate, Father Justin Rose. Pictures can be found here. These Associates will spend the next three years in what we are calling a "novitiate" before making a final commitment to live as Monastic Associates according to their state in life.

Monks to Stay in California

Friends: although we must move from Newberry Springs, we have decided to stay in Southern California. Our attempts to move to the East Coast have simply not been succesful. The money is not there, which is to say that the Lord wishes us to do something else! We are so grateful to everyone who has tried to make the big move possible, especially the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in New York and New Jersey. But it is not to be.

Fr Maximos at Holy Theophany

In early March Father Maximos visited our sister monastery, Holy Theophany, in Olympia, WA. The nuns hold an annual series of Lenten talks on Saturday afternoons, and Mother Anastasia asked Fr. Maximos to speak about the divine office.
